WEDDING VOWS

THOUGHTS ON A MARRIAGE

ARE YOU NERVOUS?

MORE THAN A WEDDING

ENDLESS CIRCLE

PERMANENCE

WHO ARE YOU?

MARRIAGE

ONE

WEDDING VOWS

I will be me and you will be you

Each to the other, will be true

To the end of time I expect no less

Our love will sustain and God will bless

THOUGHTS ON A MARRIAGE

I cannot think of anything more wonderful than spending my future with my buddy. A friend who knows me better than myself and still loves me. Who laughs at my lapses of memory or randomness of thought. A sage who turns the mirror of love on me that I may laugh the loudest at my own foibles. An ancient who knows how to loosen the bonds of decorum that keep the real me under cover. The wise student who learned that nothing is to be unexpected from the uncovered me. The woman who taught me to revel in the real instead of half living in the wish. The beauty who proved hers isn’t skin deep, but goes all the way to her heart. The young girl who takes my hand and leads me to the most exhilarating view of life I’ve ever seen. The child who found in me my child, still awed by the world we live in. More than this I could not imagine. No dream could ever surpass the grandeur of the place I am at, bursting with life, at home in my skin, surrounded by love and filled with joyful anticipation of what is to be.

ARE YOU NERVOUS?

Are you nervous? they all ask

        The wedding’s getting close

Excited yet? a question posed

        These are my daily dose

From the curious and the friendly

And those who know me well

None understand the love I feel

        To them I cannot tell

That anticipated joy is mine

        No fears have I today

Quite the opposite is the case you see

I won’t let her get away

MORE THAN A WEDDING

The wedding day has come and gone

        The festivities are done

The justice said the words she must

        Now legally we’re one

The memory of music fades

        But our children’s faces last

The joy that all had gathered for

        A wonderful glow still casts

More than just a joining of

        A husband and a wife

A gathering of two families for

        A relationship for life

We will become a central home

A place for all to come

Where love and comfort emanate

        And peace the ultimate sum

ENDLESS CIRCLE

Diamonds in a ring of gold

        On my finger sit

Sparkle like a liquid light

        Proof I did commit

Symbol of a love divine

        Two spirits joined, enthused

An endless circle just as we,

        Souls forever fused

PERMANENCE

It is strange I feel no different

Were two but now we’re one

And yet there is a thing that’s new

A sense that time has run

A past that goes beyond when we

        Met in flesh and bone

A history felt within us both

        Result, seeds earlier sown

And future days yet to come

        Undreamed of joys galore

Knowledge certain it will be

For us long years in store

A simple change in how we view

That point in space we are

Before, a fragment in the void

        And now a shooting star

A sense of “is and will be”, comes

        Secures in us the thought

From this point on the gift of love

        Makes possible all we’ve sought

There is no “if” as ahead we look

Just when and how, for sure

Permanence is what we feel

        As one, we will endure

WHO ARE YOU?

Are you my husband? She looked at me

What have we done? No difference see

I took unto myself a wife

She makes a heaven of my life

We signed the papers said the words

But love’s the tie around us girds

Wife’s the word that I should use

Lover, friend, the ones I choose

MARRIAGE

I am my beloved

        And she is me

We are together

And we are free

We are bound, by loves sweet cord

        Supported by its strength

However far apart we go

        We can’t exceed its length

Each is nourished by the other

        Mind and body both

Time is near for us to join

        Pledge to each our troth

To say in words for all to hear

That we will be a pair

That we will face the time to come

        With courage and with flair

That love will keep us to the end

        In joy and merriment

And laughter will our med’cn be

        As life we’ll reinvent

To fit our mold with souls set free

        And optimism lent

We’ll fill our cup with endless firsts

A life of love well spent

ONE

You and I will soon be one

In law as well as spirit

How shall we look upon this change?

How should we then consider it?

Will anything be different now

That official status brings?

Will the meaning of our being change

        After we exchange our rings?

Will I take your love for granted

When the paper says you’re mine?

Will you stop the friendship having

        Won me hook and line?

Will laughter fade and boredom come

Will we be like the rest?

There is no doubt we will be challenged

Life will put us to the test.

There also is no doubt for me

That with you at my side

Life will be adventure filled

As we wander far and wide

Each will view the world through

        The others eyes with awe

Sharing all that we can be

        The finest and the flaw

We shall know the greatest love

        That each ourselves conceive

As each gives to the other care

        And safety net we weave

I’ll give you love and due respect

        I’ll carry when you’re tired

I’ll focus only on intent

        Not in pettiness be mired

If you will give your hand to me

        I’ll hold it tenderly

And all the love my heart contains

Will pass to you for free

I’ll give you laughter as you will me

We’ll be children young and free

We’ll start our lives all over again

Enjoy the world and all we see

And I will get from you in future

All the things in past were given

The things I love and cherish so

To give me you have striven

So what will change when we are wed

And what will stay the same?

In one way all we know will change,

        In another… just your name.
