THE OWNING OF OURSELVES

THE KEY

THE THINGS THAT MATTER MOST

LATELY IT HAS COME TO ME

HALF A WORLD AWAY

SAFE ENOUGH

WE’LL ALWAYS HAVE PARIS

REACH OUT TO ME

LOST IN YOU

ACROSS THE HEAVENS

LOST DREAM

OUR PLACE

PARADISE FOUND

TOO HARD TO LOVE

IN YOUR EYES

THE OWNING OF OURSELVES

Long ago an author said, “Lives

            Of quiet desperation”

To describe most of us

And the state of our relations

But I for one have found a life

            For which it isn’t true

I have begun again , you see

            And have a different view

I’ve been blessed with love that’s grand

            And friendship deep and strong

All the things in youth I dreamed

            And waited for, so long

My love is my safe haven and

            I, am her home port

We are the doors, the entrance to

            Each others impenetrable fort

It is the place we are ourselves,

            Naked in and out

Love is our religion, we

            Have become devout

Truth is our foundation, honest

            View we give with care

Who we are is our gift

What we find, we always share

Life is an adventure coming

            At us lightning fast

Our eyes are on the future, having

Learned well from the past

To have our dreams fulfilled in life

Means taking on a risk

Living without fear, the unknown

            We deign not to resist

We’ll live through many dreams, some

            Good and some less so

To get to paradise itself,

through the rest, we all must go

In the end we all will learn

            As into life we delve

The greatest gift of love received

            Is the owning of ourselves

The greatest gift of love bestowed

Is the lightening of our load

JOINING AS WE GO

How to describe the feelings I get

            When we do things together

Like when we rode our bikes this morning

In a rainy kind of weather

Fresh air blowing in my face

            I pedaled easy on

You were riding at my side

We talked and time was gone

I felt as if I floated and

            All I saw did please

The absence of anxiety

And the need to it appease

I never have in all my life

            Felt so finished so complete

You are a part the core of me

            My outlook is upbeat

A quiet merging of two souls

            Our spirits move and dance

Life seems a blessed gift to me

            Our joining did enhance

Somewhere deep below the surface

            We have come to know

The beauty in our lives is from

            The joining as we go

A PLACE THAT CANNOT BE

Are you the person that I see

Or the one that makes me, me?

What I see is just transparent

A form to hold, what inside must be

A container used to keep together

All I love in form I know

A place beyond plain time and space

That takes me where I want to go

You are the door to seeing me

            To joy undreamed of, free

You insulate, protect my soul

            Soar my heart to apogee

You are my breath, environment

My sun, my stars, my dreams

You are essential to my life

            No matter how it seems

The you I see is just for focus

            You surround, envelope me

You carry me in safety, forward

            You’re my security

You give me faith to trust, in things

            My eyes can never see

You give me courage to attain

            A place that cannot be

Together we can make exist

            A private world complete

Undreamed of peace and happiness

            Within our world, replete

You are my youth returned to me

You have banished all my fears

Together we will younger grow

            No matter passing years

ALL MY NEEDS

All my needs are met

            My life, it is complete

My mind gets constant nourishment

            Disease I can defeat

The things I know expand

            Quiet strength is mine

An angel takes my hand

            I live some grand design

Whatever I am feeling

            Though very deep inside

Is known by my caretaker

            Brings comfort to my side

When hunger claws at me

Though day, or in the night

A meal will come to be

More than food it is delight

There’s the laying on of hands

Brings me up into the light

The warmth another soul imparts

            Makes the world seem right

I have a special guardian

My fate is in your charge

My strength is daily magnified

My joy, it does grow large

I thank you now and evermore

For what you give to me

I know not what may lie in store

With your help new joy I’ll see

What I have done to earn this gift

            Escapes my every thought

I only know though past I sift

This new life you have wrought

PARTNER

I have a partner to confide

            My alter ego, another’s pride

The quality of my today

A gift unselfish, come my way

PROLOGUE

You write me in rhyme and occasional verse,

Singing my praises, but nothing is terse.

Nothing is rude, nothing is vulgar,

But plain it is written, no Helga or Olga.

You knew the challenge, is something I’d take,

To respond with some rhymes, for dignity’s sake.

So here I begin to write, lovely one,

Sit back and relax, I soon will be done.

Then read, read away my wandering tale,

Of a heart far away but never for sale.

THE KEY

When all the world seems strangely quiet

            Pregnant with hostility

When quiet isn’t calm or right

            And not tranquility

When vulnerable is how you feel

            And demons are unseen

Alone you are within your thoughts

Need help on which to lean

When try you do to let in light

            To clear the air inside

And find you are a prisoner in

            Places you once did hide

You must reach out to one you love

And trust the past as guide

Acceptance of the one you are

Gives the key to come inside

THE THINGS THAT MATTER MOST

The things that matter most to me

            Are not gold or steel

Like the hand that squeezes mine

            That brings loves caring feel

The things that I can’t do without

            Are not in boxes kept

Loves peace that keeps me warm at night

Or the dreams with which I’ve slept

The things I surely fear to lose

Aren’t prized by stores or banks

Like the glowing look in my love’s eyes

For which I oft give thanks

The things the future holds in store

            Are not of great import

As long as I will have my love

At my side, as my escort

And all the wealth I could amass

            Would not ever be

As precious as the things I have

            That matter most to me

LATELY IT HAS COME TO ME

Lately it has come to me

I’m not the one I used to be

Subtle changes altering

            The perceptions senses bring

My heart now sings to different tunes

Then moved me past so many moons

Perhaps it’s love that makes the difference

Or maybe age, the change gives inference

I only know the world is different

            Seen through older eyes

Coincidence, that love has come as

            Old ideas meet their demise?

It is as if a tune was written

            For an instrument unknown

Being fashioned by my life

Of trees my seeds had sown

It is as if I was but half

            A duet yet to be

The beauty of the harmony

            Unborn in she and me

But when at last I heard the sound

            Of our two souls together

I was transformed, irrevocably

            In ways I cannot measure

Reality is newly formed

            The past is far away

Old is dream, as new was then,

            Prologue to today

HALF A WORLD AWAY

Half a world away and still we’re together

Your today is my yesterday,

But our tomorrow’s not a whether

Time is fractured, Space illusion,

You are my constant, lighthouse, infusion

The heavens do move, while the earth does its turns,

My love for you gently and continuously burns.

Cultures, language, customs blur,

On one thought, we will always concur.

It’s not technology that keeps us so close,

We’re two parts of one spirit, two petals, one rose.

Enfolded, entwined, kissed by the sun,

Surrounded by love, not heavy but fun.

I am newly born, yet history remains,

I am inside out, I can not explain.

We are together, like H, 2 and O,

Combined we are calm, a natural flow.

As I travel the world,

There are things that I miss,

Like the wonderful feel and taste of your kiss.

I am alone and yet I am not,

Your remembered breath on my neck is still hot.

I close my eyes and you’re instantly there.

Your presence engulfs me,

It is every where.

Soft and quiet you hold my hand,

Or kiss my brow, in a far distant land.

From a place deep inside me, you rise when I need,

To quiet the fears with advice that I heed.

Ageless and timeless our feelings do grow,

Making our love, something special to know.

O love of my life, live on in my soul,

Without you, I’ve learned, I’ll never be whole.

I am much more than thought, ever I’d be,

Your bright light inside me, helps me to see.

Partners forever our souls do agree,

No one did I love ever more Liz than thee.

SAFE ENOUGH

My love pays me a compliment

            Unparalleled in my years

She says I am her safety and,

            I’m moved almost to tears

She says she ‘s safe enough to be

Her self, with what I give

Responsibility great is mine

            Help another soul to live

WE’LL ALWAYS HAVE PARIS

On a street whose name deserts me

            In a café simple there

By the hotel Montparnasse

            Many meals with banter fair

We filled our cup with friendship in

            A language most unknown

Nourished heart and soul, with

The love of strangers shown

Wandered open markets choosing

            Food our eyes did see

Savored figs still warm from being,

Not long from the tree

Strolled along the Seine in

            The shadows and the sun

Watched the lovers, did the same

            As we melted into one

Met an angel in MontMart

Perched upon a roof

Left some francs, got a kiss

From the mime who played the spoof

Watched a pigeon sliding down

A hill too steep to walk

For the tourists a funicular

From which the sights to gawk

Days and nights of joy we carried

            Homeward at the end

Dinner with good friends we had

            Tour D’Argent at rivers bend

Gifts for others we collected

            Packed for journey home

For ourselves there were the memories

Of a Paris we did roam

We can easily recall

All the looks and laughs we shared

Feel the feelings now as then

Of our love and how we cared

It only takes an instant for

            One to take the other

To a place we’ve been before

            Whether real or quite another

It matters not the things we have

Hanging on our walls

We’ll always have the Paris that

            Our hearts in love recalls

REACH OUT TO ME

Reach out to me my troubled friend

Hold on to love we’ve built

There is no problem we can’t share

Or cause our love to wilt

There is no need for either, or

            We’re all encompassing

Together we’re more ever was

In love we can take wing

LOST IN YOU

Lost in you

Altered view

Body needs

Passion leads

Mind is absent

Thought is rent

All is feeling   Senses reeling

Now connected     Joy elected

Urgent flight Blind as night  Flesh is thirsting Rockets bursting Satisfaction…

End of action

Recomposing

Dreamy      dozing

ACROSS THE HEAVENS

Across the heavens, across the universe,

Two minds do play in thoughts and verse.

A word is turned, a challenge met,

One’s moon does rise, One’s sun does set.

Around the globe with the speed of light,

These two souls play tag at night.

Each running and searching, hoping to see,

A glimpse of the other, not yet to be.

Freed from their bodies these souls do rise,

To a place in the firmament, a place in the skies.

From on high the future they see,

O wonder of wonders, together, they’re free.

LOST DREAM

When I was just an innocent boy

            I dreamed of loving you

Faceless nameless thing of beauty

            I loved before the view

Of you and all the things you are

            I would come to know

I would be the greatest lover

The goal I set to go

In time you came into my life

            Your smile enlivened me

It lit the sky and my heart too

I danced with joy to see

But like first lovers everywhere

            I found you before myself

Devoted all my life to you

Left my soul upon the shelf

And when came time for us to part

            As inevitably we knew

We both were less in some respects

            Rebuild, the job to do

We weren’t bad or mean in purpose

            We didn’t intend to hurt

We simply didn’t know ourselves

            Or how our needs assert

We went as far as we could go

We thought that love had failed

But love is pure a healing light

            Against extinction we had railed

Locked in struggle day and night

            Win or lose, not joined

Frantic desperate hunger reigned

            Loneliness, exchange we coined

And in the end two valiant souls

            Captured by loves gleam

Came to know the emptiness

            Of life without their dream

OUR PLACE

Searing heat you bring to me

            Fire you cannot tame

Plunging deep primordial being

            My passions to inflame

Space explodes, time reforms

I am but air and light

Shorn of all my earthly weight

My heart and soul take flight

I see you also without age

            Lost in your own birth

Together we have found our place

Of truth, and know love’s worth

Saturday, November 07, 1998, In celebration of your birth, without which I would be eternally alone.  Me

PARADISE FOUND

Each new morn as I awaken

            And see your lovely face

Of all that I have left behind

            I’ve no regrets, no trace

To see the sun in all its splendor

            Lighting up the sky

Share the joys of life with you

As in your arms I lie

You are my dreams embodied, my

            Formless needs expressed

You bring to me completeness full

            Free the parts repressed

Teach me how to fly again

            Make of me a part

Of you and you a part of me,

To give new life a start

Life as it was meant to be

            Fulfilling, joyous, free

Unseeing eyes taught to know

            By love bestowed on me

Basic, simple, trusting, sure

            Love engulfs us two

Naturally we flow, in step

            Security, known by few

Before you were a part of me

            I lived another’s life

You freed the me that lived inside

            Became my partner, wife

Re-invented my life’s view

            Took away the years

Returned to me expectant hope

            Calmed my inner fears

I struggle to express my love

To thank you for your gifts

To give to you as I’ve received

            Though many words I sift

Perhaps I’ll borrow words of yours

            Convey it crystal clear

“I am weightless, I am light”

            Whenever you are near

I want for nothing, heart is full

            With you I’m unrestrained

With strength that grew from love with you

            My life I have regained

I’ve found in you my paradise

            The future of my youth

Rejoice in life with you today

            And ever more, in truth

TOO HARD TO LOVE

Her hair was dark, smile inviting

            Tease and play she did

Agenda deep inside her mind

            She very carefully hid

She held herself a perfect ten

            In matters purely sensual

Aggressively pursued my heart

            Thinking marriage was eventual

She counted all the ways she followed

            As best, the only road

And often counted me as lacking

            Trying vainly me to goad

I tried with all my heart to please

            Revamped to compromise

But over time my difficulty

            Impossible to disguise

I did what every lover does

            Rethink adapt soul search

But we did not go forward smoothly

            Our relationship did lurch

High and low, Stop and start

            Make changes to my being

Measure every compromise

            Against the larger, seeing

That each alone is not so bad

            Not difficult to endure

But all together a heavy weight

            Too heavy to ensure

That I could carry on forever

            And lead a joyous life

Love shouldn’t need a rest, relief

            Or get from lover, strife

Those little things made up our lives

            Like bricks upon a path

Eventually they built for us

            The fabric of our wrath

That poisoned all the good we had

            Dismembered our connection

Led her to step back from me

            Reevaluate her election

But once relieved of all that weight

            My heart was light, surprise

Someone else would better do

            I soon came to surmise

IN YOUR EYES

In your eyes I see forever

Loneliness has gone away

You bring to me a world of wonder

Remove the fears of yesterday

My heart beats strong within my chest

Adventure calls my name

Together life will glory bring

As we make it, a loving game
